Salt Lake City, UT

What a day. Service day #2 began with a lovely morning and a wonderful experience at the Hope Lodge in Salt Lake City, where we volunteered to help with work around the building. Some of us also made lunch for those staying at the lodge. The Hope Lodge is such a beautiful place! It serves as a free place to stay for patients undergoing treatments in the area and is basically the same idea as the Ronald McDonald House, but for patients (and some family members) over 18. It is truly a beautiful place that gives patients (those who normally commute from a great distance) the opportunity to have a place to stay while going through treatments at multiple hospitals in Salt Lake City, with some patients even staying up to 100 days (after transplants, for example).

After spending time at the Hope Lodge, it was time to head to the home of a lovely woman who had offered to make us a spaghetti and salad lunch at her home in the suburbs of Salt Lake. However, one of our vans broke down on the way there, and two of us had quite an adventure waiting with the van until we could get it towed and get a ride from the functioning van back to our host site. Thank goodness Enterprise saved us with a minivan and SUV to replace our second van for the next few days; we’re leaving early tomorrow morning to continue our run and get into Pocatello, ID!
